Gelligaer (Wood of the Fort) Ramblers Group, was founded in 1995 with just six members. Now, with numbers in excess of 100, it continues to maintain an intimate and friendly charisma.
Membership is drawn mainly from the Rhymney Valley, which stretches from Caerphilly in the South to Rhymney in the North.
The historic village of Gelligaer, which still retains the foundations of a Roman Fort, was until recent years a predominantly mining community and, following the demise of the industry is, along with the rest of the valleys area, slowly reverting to its former habitat. This natural phenomenon, together with huge efforts by local government to preserve heritage and clear wasteland, has resulted in there being plenty to see for the discerning walker.
As well as glorious views from the valley tops there are three Country Parks at Cwm Darren, Penallta and Bargoed plus other features such as Drenewydd Museum, Elliot Colliery Winding House, Hengoed/Maesycwmmer Viaduct, Llancaiach Fawr Living History Museum and, of course, the impressive Norman Castle in Caerphilly said to be the second largest in Europe. In addition, the 29 Mile Caerphilly Ridgeway circular walk also passes through Gelligaer.
The Group meets every Sunday morning at 9.15am at Oakfield Street Car Park, Ystrad Mynach. GR ST147944. (can change; please click on the walks programme button for up to date details).
Any visitor wishing to join a walk is warmly welcome.
